80-20 Rule:

There is a general rule of thumb (does not apply to all companies), that (say for a 52 week timeframe) a stock has a certain range that it may trade within. 80 percent of the stock's movement will occur in only 20% of the time. That is stocks usually move on news, such as earnings reports, insiders buying/selling, economic news, company press releases, analysts upgrades/downgrades, etc. These events do not come out everyday. So if you are expecting a stock to move a lot, then you have to own it prior to one of these events occurring.

Look what happened the last time news on Genrad came out. It dropped from 18/19ish to its current trading range. It will stay here, until new news propels it into a new trading range. It may move slightly, but that is about it.

Without any new information stocks may languish (ie. trade between 13 1/2 and 15 1/2). The earnings report next week is an opportunity for the stock to break out of this trading range (up or down).

My Personal opinion: The 1st quarter earnings report is immaterial to the future movement of this stock. Analysts are looking to see what the company's expectations are for the rest of this year (and also whether they will announce whether they won the ADS contract from Ford).

If the company reports status quo, then Genrad will be in a holding pattern.

Regards,
Jeff
