The two Titans of twentieth century art are Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They finally led the way toward freeing painting for bolder experiments in color and design, and greater lyricism and evocation. In the age of photography, they may have saved easel painting from obsolescence. Whistler called for painting to "aspire to the condition of music", but he remained constrained by the subject. Matisse and Picasso had the audacity to truly aspire to the condition of music, treating the subject with poetic license.....
