Perhaps the single most influential poet of the century was T.S. Eliot. His influence went in a couple of somewhat divergent directions: as a poet, he championed "modernism", the use of experimental forms and the attempt to capture the fractured modern sensibility. As a cultural critic, he was a notable conservative, or even reactionary, who longed for the sense of an organic society lost in the tempestuous change of the modern world.....
