10/15/99 - RESEARCH ALERT-Office Depot (ODP.N) 4Q EPS view up

CHICAGO, Oct 15 (Reuters) - ABN AMRO said in a research report Friday it raised its fourth quarter earnings per share estimate for Office Depot Inc. by 2 cents to 22 cents, and maintained its buy rating.

-- Office Depot reported third quarter EPS of 19 cents, essentially in line with expectations.

-- The Delray Beach, Fla.-based company's comparable store sales rose slightly ahead of ABN AMRO's estimate at seven percent, helped by better-than-anticipated results in the business services group, ABN AMRO said.

-- Comparable store sales for the stores division matched the estimated target at 3 percent.

-- Office Depot bought back $36.3 million in shares during the third quarter and $9.4 million in shares so far in October, essentially completing the $500 million authorized stock buyback far sooner than expected, ABN AMRO noted.

-- ABN AMRO raised its fiscal year 2000 projection by 10 cents to $1.10.
