Steve,
I didn't miss out on the New American Standard. Go back and see when it was first published. The Vulgate was based on the Septuagint, which was the Greek translation of the Hebrew. There is always the problem with translations that something may be lost. This is inevitable due to the nature of language.
Now who told you the Vulgate was erroneous, or have you studied Latin yourself?
I did not say that I don't remember the bible. I remember it quite well. I said my memory of the details has dimmed. I have assimilated it into my consciousness, where it waits for something to relate to. So for example, I can understand and learn from Sting's song, "Mad About You".
I have said several times recently what my basic problem is with Christianity, but let me add a few things. The details of the bible revealed by your study of various manuscripts, translations, etc. are unimportant. Look at the religion as a whole. Look at the fact that the gospels are reports of what someone named Jesus was purported to have said. Look at the fact that religious leaders of both the Jews and the Christians were the ones who determined for us what constitutes the bible.
Most importantly, consider the vast source of knowledge available to us from the study of nature, history, and thinkers of all persuasions throughout the ages. The bible is a reflection of Jewish culture, that is all.
