Robert, (today's) cable limitation is that the signal travels along a fixed path whereas in telephony, the connection is switched. In other words, cable connections and signaling paths are permanent; telephony connections exist only during time of call set-up, the actual call itself, and call termination. For cable to leverage its inherent advantage of higher bandwidth vs. telephony twisted wire, cable needs to become switched. This will require massive investment on the part of cable companies who look to telephony companies for their switching expertise (cable companies have no such expertise in-house). This would favor technologies such as ADSL that can be implemented over current media like twisted pair.
