Interesting article you present. As always, microsoft people are FULL of IT! They don't see anyone else of being of any value or threat to them.

"Mr. Reingold, who finally had his chance to respond to Mr. Cowpland `s unceasing claims of superiority for Corel software, said that he has downloaded and looked at the Office for Java. He called it "an interesting proof of concept."

The Microsoft executive said that although he respected Corel for being able to develop such a major program in Java, he said that the new suite has far fewer features than the full-fledged version and is quite slow."

I remember the same thing being said a few years ago about Windows!! It certainly was no match for the Mac. When your full of yourself the only real threat you never see is yourself.

I've downloaded the Office for Java and it does look pretty good. I wouldn't expect Corel to give a fully working version for free. And if I were Cowpland, I'd keep some of the real goodies hidden until the actual release. Certainly this version does require some more work but then I ran Office for Java (a 21st Century technology on a 20th Century O/S called Windows/95. Alot still remains to be put into place for Java's world domination, but it will come and it is happening everyday with faster networking technologies, fast CPUs and graphics and better development tools. The pure flexibility of being able to run your Java app on whatever machine the next breakthrough in technology brings forth is just too alluring. Corporations are no longer going to be forced to buy only Intel based desktops. How about Mips, Alpha, Sparcs and what else you want that can run Java.
