In the 1400's every intelligent geographer or scientist believed the world was spherical. Even Aristotle (much earlier) understood that (the shape of the earth's shadow on the moon during an eclipse.) Hellenic scientists ad come close to accurate measurements of the diameter. The main argument in the 14th century was over the diameter. Columbus, fortunately, was wrong and guessed too small. He wasn't an astronomer, just an adventurer and cartographer and seaman. He didn't know where he was going when he set off. He didn't know where he was when he got there. And he didn't know where he had been when he came back.
