"Grabbing the tarbaby in the nuthouse." Your metaphor is suggestive. That may be EXACTLY the way it is. I was drawn more to the metaphor of the Myth of Sisyphus, myself, but tarbaby has less grandeur and more piquancy. "Grabbing the tarbaby by the nuts?"
