Thanks for your reply. I agree with you in a general/philosophical way. I'd add, after a bit of maturing, a product can go mass volume. Big company's handle mass production and mass market deployment pretty well. I mean, instead of specialized silicon, you get formulated cookie cutter silicon. It eventually starts to become more of an issue of processes, than technology. That's how I look at it.

In general, I think they sell out to larger companies because there's some strategic fit between the two companies (which could include RND budgets as you said, but I'm more apt to think its more about marketing reach). Also, an MNA or IPO is the only significant way to make the stock readily liquid. Privately-held stock can look good on paper, but it doesn't buy you anything.
