Re-boot stuff ...
I don't have any 'solid' evidence for this, but it seems in Windows' quest for efficiency, it doesn't always take it's cues from what's on your disk, but looks at what's in memory instead, saving a few precious microseconds of the user's time. The trouble is, this 'memory image' may not contain valid values and your troubles perpetuate. A cold boot (Re-apply the power, not a swift kick!) forces Windows to read the disk, and hence, load the correct, (or more correct) settings.
People post that they disable stand-by mode. If they don't have any .JOB files scheduled, this could reduce their troubles, but, if they've an active Task Scheduler, those tasks won't get run with power off. I've a bunch of 'midnight' stuff I'm relying on .JOB files to run and I'd hate to return to the time-wasting of doing this stuff during the day, or even worse, forgetting to do it altogether.
