Western Pacific Gold Inc. - Announcement

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--The President of Western Pacific Gold Inc. ("WPI"),
Mr. Nicholas Mather, wishes to advise the market of WPI's geological
sampling, assaying and interpretation protocol for its projects in
Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Solomon Islands

WPI's granted tenements have, as of March 27, 1997, been renewed for
a period of two years. This has been confirmed in a letter from the
Ministry of Energy, Water & Mineral Resources, wherein the Ministry
also confirmed their continuing support for WPI_s mineral exploration
programs in Solomon Islands. The renewed tenements are:

Koloula Special Prospecting License 189
Mbetilonga Special Prospecting License 191
Sutakiki Special Prospecting License 195
Central Special Prospecting License 190

WPI projects in Solomon Islands have been investigated in the field by
David Williamson, the principal of David Williamson Associates Limited,
who has also checked the company_s tenure position.

When WPI began researching and investigating Solomon Islands in mid 1993,
there were no significant project areas applied for in the country. WPI
reviewed the entire country_s prospectivity and selected the most prospective
areas with the best supporting logistics. Accordingly, WPI believes that
it is advantaged by the outstanding logistics presented by its top class
projects.

WPI is also fortunate in having the services of local Solomon Island geologists
and field support crews and is wholly supported by the efforts of in-house
access agreement negotiators. Exploration work under the granted SPL's in
Solomon Islands can only be conducted when the company has completed access
agreements. WPI is pleased to advised that it has access agreements with
acknowledged land owners over all of the prospecting areas it is currently
investigating.

The company uses the services of world renowned, independent geological
consulting and contracting firm, Etheridge Henley Williams (EHW), to provide
independent views on all of the company_s exploration activities, particularly
target selection and further exploration procedures. EHW's principal,
Mr. Dick Henley, has been and will continue to be personally involved,
particularly in the field of structural interpretation. WPI is fortunate
in being the only company with high resolution proprietary aero-magnetic and
co-incident radiometric data over its current granted areas in Solomon Islands.

WPI has received a completed report by EHW that has outlined in priority some
40 different aero-magnetic targets with varying degrees of structural,
geo-chemical and geological support. Previous geo-chemical data, which assists
the company in its target selection, has been collected by Freeport, BHP, Utah
(now a subsidiary of BHP), Kia Ora Gold and Newmont. To date, WPI sampling has
confirmed the results from sampling collected by these companies and is confident
that these results are reliable.
Papua New Guinea

One of WPI's great competitive advantages is management_s experience with
exploration in the south west Pacific. Personnel regularly attend conferences
in porphyry and epithermal mineralisation and have applied these principals to
the definition of very highly prospective areas in Papua New Guinea. Of particular
note is WPI's Telefomin project which was recently granted for 2 years - EL1183.
The Telefomin area is between the giant Ok Tedi-Freida Nena gold-copper porphyry
projects in the western highlands of Papua New Guinea. These projects contain in
excess of 60 million ounces of gold and copper equivalent and WPI is, through its
wholly owned operating subsidiary in Papua New Guinea, Magma Mines N.L., the 100
percent beneficiary of Exploration License 1183 over this area. Previous exploration
results from major companies such as Kennecott Gold and BHP have outlined four
targets already with results including 80m @ 1.1 g/t gold in trenches. WPI
expects to outline in greater detail, further high tonnage porphyry copper gold
and associated skarn targets in this area over the next 6 months.

WPI's Management Direction

WPI is aiming at the discovery and _development_ of significant gold resources
in the south west Pacific and has in-house access to personnel at all levels
of discovery, assessment and development.

WPI principals, major shareholders, and executive management are geologists and
mining engineers with track records in orebody discovery and mine development.
As reported in the review by David Williamson Associates and the company's public
documents, WPI principal personnel have in excess of 70 years combined exploration
and development experience in south west Pacific Rim exploration and mining
projects. Of particular importance is the company_s access to Mr. John Bovard
who was the General Manager Development for Placer Pacific who and was responsible
as Manager, for the development of Ok Tedi, Porgera and Misima Island Gold Projects.

WPI engages a staff of dedicated, full-time, in-house geological crews with
considerable experience, exploring for gold and copper in south west Pacific
environments on its projects in Solomon Islands and maintains a full-time
operational office in the nations capital, Honiara and in Brisbane, Australia.

Collection of all WPI's samples is supervised by the company_s Vice president,
Mr. Brian Roach, who has 17 years experience in field program design and management.
The samples are all collected in accordance with the guideline set forth by the
Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Both Mr. Roach and Mr. Mather are
members of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy which is recognized
worldwide for its standards of accuracy.

WPI freights all of its samples to laboratories in Australia. The laboratories
WPI uses are all registered with the National Association of Testing Authorities
(NATA). All samples are assessed for gold and silver, and assays are conducted by
fire assay techniques. These laboratories have rigorous systems of internal and
external checks.

WPI expects to apply these principals to these projects successfully as it has
in the past and with this will lead to discovery and development of major copper
gold orebodies in the south west Pacific. The company_s development will, as
it has been in the past, be guided by the views of its independent consultants.

THE ALBERTA STOCK EXCHANGE HAS NEITHER APPROVED NOR DISAPPROVED THE INFORMATION
CONTAINED HEREIN.

Not a lot of meat on the release, but we do know they won't have troubles with the government and locals to explore their properties. The promo train is getting ready to start with drilling supposedly to start in the summer. Reviewed the land title map in another newsletter and looks quite interesting. If WPI is in the same gold and copper producing belt as the OK Tedi and Freida-Nena, we could have another major deposit as the property is huge.
