a little late in responding but e., as you pointed out, this is not a merger of equals. True, both companies have about the same number of employees but Ascend's employees produced 60% more in sales in 1996 than Cascade's did.

In the investment world (and especially now when everything is under the most intense scrutiny) headcount is everything. The fewer there are the better, both in bottom line terms and with the eagle eye analysts who pick the numbers apart better than the average vulture feasting on carrion.
