Our new house has the laundry room right next to the kitchen, on the way to the garage. That's actually pretty handy but I've been thinking how it would be even better upstairs, as the bedrooms are all upstairs. I do have a laundry chute in one of my bedroom closets, so we don't have to carry laundry downstairs, but we still have to carry it upstairs. Goodness knows, there's room upstairs. It's the Latest Thing, you know, not among people like us, but among the kind of people who get written about in newspapers, to have laundry rooms and even extra kitchens upstairs, I read about it in the Saturday AND Sunday Real Estate Sections. People who made fortunes in AOL and the defense industry, that live in million-dollar-plus houses.

But if it were upstairs, there would be the heat, and the lint, and the noise, and the smell. So I don't think I'll move it. I do like to sit at my round table and drink coffee and listen to the dishwasher wooshing and the washer warshing and the drier spinning, all at once. I always think about my hippie days, but that was long enough ago that I merely feel irony.
