I have no doubt that atmel uses deferred earnings all the time, in fact the only quarter they can not do it is the 4th quarter in which they need to claim all their earnings for the year. The problem here is that this is their first quarter so there is no deferred earnings from last year. Atmel has always planned their earning released with good planning . CFO Kris Chellem has done a good job in keeping the brokage houses in line with achievable expectation. They usually beat it by 2 cents when things go good. Now that things are uncertain and the expected is only 41-42 cents, it makes no sense to release more than necessary. They will probably save it for next quarter. The stock has taken the hit already. They will probably release 41-43 cents. You are right about the fact that the earnings are not really important this quarter because of the pre-announcement, it is what they say about their future outlook that is.
