One afternoon recently I put a load of clothes in the
washer which is located just outside the kitchen in
the attached garage. An hour later I discovered that
hot water was overflowing from the washer, turning
the garage into a steam room. Fortunately all the
water ran down the driveway and into the street gutter.

I called the Sears 800 service number and talked to
a woman who sounded like somebody's Aunt Millie
from Iowa -- lots of "Oh, you poor dear" and so forth.
I fully expected her to offer to send a box of cookies.

No cookies, but a pleasant Maytag-Repairman sort of
fellow showed up on right on schedule. It was a very
hot afternoon, and he told me that he had just gotten
back from Las Vegas where it was even hotter but the
humidity was low. He said he didn't care anything
about Las Vegas but "the wife" liked to go once a year.

Total repair bill was $89. Anything under $100 seems
a bargain these days.

The repairman said he's seen some big disasters with
interior laundry room washers that had a water-level
control problem like mine or a hose that had broken.
It would seem that interior laundry rooms should have
recessed floors with drains.

But we've come a long way from my grandmother's
laundry room. We called it "the wash house," but
it was actually a large room attached to the garage.
It had a ringer-type washer and a couple of large
tubs for rinsing. The drying cycle involved hanging
the clothes on metal clothes lines in the back yard.
I should have thought about all of that when I thought
I was being inconvenienced with a Sears service call.
