Excellent point.
Getting those kind of perspectives can really make a difference in us. And what things we do and how we do them.
Eg, every once in a while, when I'm getting some pain in the ass medical treatment, I realize it is because of where I live that I'm getting it at all. Not because of merit. Because of opportunity.
It's that way with many things, in fact most things, in this country.
Am I a spoiled brat?
Yah. And I try not to be a brat while I'm being spoiled.
In at least half of the world, I would have been dead a long time ago, and it would have been in excruciating pain. The only reason I'm getting a state of the art new hip is because for some reason (or none) I was born in America and have insurance. Even in England, the wait for similar procedures is up to 5 years.
I am consistently reminded of places I've been where the reality is "making do," or dying, or frankly, suicide. Where immobility and lack of ability to "earn" will weed you out as surely as agony.
A parallel contrast of my position now and past, with that of other regions of the world and circumstances, is very upsetting and frightening.
Everytime we're reminded of that is not enough.

We are all a burden. But in our local and "relative" circumstances we may forget it. When it "comes back to me," I am ashamed.
I see my neighbor had to start a fire, from his chimney. At least he has a way to get warm, for him and his family. Some times we think only "ignorant and lazy" people are cold. Get cold.
Dream on. Slumber in our brilliance and clean warm blankets and beds.
(I'm going to turn up the heat and hit the food box.)
It doesn't hurt to remember the real world. I need to remember that. Golly. The real world hurts. |
