Adding COVD and HIFN to Wild Ass! portfolio

HIFN HIF/FN (prononced Hyphen) designs, develops and markets high-performance, multi-protocol packet processors and semiconductor devices that enable secure, high-bandwidth network connectivity and efficient storage of business information. For old hands, remember STAC, the data compression software people who almost went out of business because of MSFT? Who won a mutli-million dollar suit against MSFT for the same? Well, HI/FN is a very sucessful spin off. THeir data compression chips are perfect for broadband infrastructure being ramped up as we wpeak. Stock got killed (52 week high of 150+ !!) because its two biggest customers made an inventory adjustment. Last calendar quarter is thus a goner (but still 10 million in renevenue expected). Folks, HI/FN is the defacto industry standard for data compression chips, and their patent lasts until 2007. Go where angels fear to tread!
COVD DSL, in my opinon, will be one of the great investment themes of 2000 (that, and Linux, <g>). Covad is a packet-based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier that provides high-speed digital communications services using Digital Subscriber Line technology to Internet Service Provider and enterprise customers. For the six months ended 6/99, revenues totaled $16.4 million, up from $995 thousand. Net loss applicable to Common totaled $71.9 million, up from $11.7 million. Results reflect the expanding of the Company's network offset by increased headcount and debt levels. Eleven analysts follow this.
Note: In the same business as NTPA, one of my most successfuls tocks this year. But NTPA is in the Internet Value! portfolio with a more reasonable PSR. If NTPA keeps this up, it will end up in the Wildass portoflio too. COVD was also a Reader pick earlier in the year.
