QUALCOMM's CDMA PATENTS have become the de facto standard for the enabling technology in IS 95 and is now fast becoming the universal standard IN 3G ,cdma2000 and W-CDMA.The CDMA "nitch" area where B-CDMA and other types come in are not a de facto standard and therefore they are confined in its own little area (chimps)like Interdigital with there B-CDMA.Industry wishes to have one standard in which to model from to meet economies of scale and that is where QUALCOMM is the Gorilla. The important thing to keep in mind is the BIG vendors are casting there dye's to mold the STANDARD.The answer to your questions is in the movement within the industry and this is precisely why Intel and Phillips have position within the standard. These giants in chip manufacturing are behind QUALCOMM and only help to influence the direction of standards development.QUALCOMM owns the patents and is leading the industry wether its Mobile,WLL,Fixed ect.The IPR involved has been shaping movement in QUALCOMM's favor. The following read highlights thoughts in this process and it preceded the now famous Ericsson capitulation to QUALCOMM.http://www.wirelessweek.com/intl/etsi831.htm
