Eric L: Respect. Your run down on CDMA in general now and in the future with relation to the migration of GSM to 3rd gen is clear and helpful to rational discussion going forward.

That by the way is most appropriate on this thread where there is always great difficulty with shared understanding of the terminology of the GG.

A couple of questions concerning the data roll out as you see it.

You state (assume your opinion) that WCDMA will be the first of the 3rd gen to market - in Japan in early 2001.

I try to follow the data situation as carefully as I can since that has been my primary investment focus since moving from an emphasis on networking to rapid efficient data transmission using communication technologies.

Looking at the data migration itself, I certainly understand your point that GSM has been available for data use (although at relatively slow speed) in the real world well before CDMA has.

But my understanding is that the first step in CDMA 2000 3XRTT will follow the introduction of 1XRTT in Korea and then Japan beginning this year and then spread in early 2000. (Understand IXRTT is a data advancement in CDMAOne as a step in mirgating toward true CDMA 2000 - doubling voice efficiency as well) The exact date for 3XRTT and full CDMA 2000 is not clear in Korea and Japan but isn't it likely prior to that of WCDMA even in Japan?

Would appreciate your expanding on the data evolution of CDMA and GSM toward and into 3rd gen as you see it now.

Best as always.
