Open Text and Adobe announce smart "push" of business documents
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1997--
Livelink Integrates with Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Capture for
Agent-Based Business Process Automation Systems
Open Text Corporation (OTEXF:Nasdaq) today announced that its industry leading1 Livelink Intranet product will use its agent-based "smart push" capabilities to deliver highly relevant information to corporate users in the Portable Document Format (PDF), the file format created by Adobe( Acrobat( and Adobe Capture( software that preserves document fidelity across computer platforms and printers.
With the integration of Adobe Acrobat technology and Livelink, organizations can automate the movement of documents regardless of source - paper or electronic - through complex, global business processes. Anyone anywhere with access permission can view the work in progress or the final results without any loss of the visual richness of the document.
Customers could, for example, configure a Livelink system so that documents scanned using Adobe Capture automatically trigger processes such as full-text indexing and initiation of appropriate Livelink workflows. In addition, a user could ask a Livelink Change Agent to notify her whenever a particular workflow step is late, or a specific type of document in PDF is entered into a project or a folder that she cares about. With today's announcement, the object can not only be downloaded by clicking on a link in the email notification message, but can also be viewed in full WSIWYG mode as a PDF file.
By using Acrobat Capture 2.0 software, large quantities of paper documents can be converted into an electronic format that can be easily distributed and managed on corporate intranets. Acrobat Capture software uses a combination of OCR, font and page recognition to convert scanned paper documents into small, fully searchable PDF files. Once converted to PDF via Acrobat Capture, electronic documents maintain all the formatting and graphic elements of the paper original, including tables, photographs and handwritten notes or signatures.
Alternatively, documents that are available in electronic source, such as native word processor files, can be automatically rendered into PDF and full-text indexed upon being checked into Livelink. As a result, a high-quality, viewable version of the native document is always available.
"Because so many critical business processes manifest themselves as documents, from the negotiation of contracts to the development of standard operating procedures, automating how those documents are collaborated on and distributed can significantly reduce costs and speed time to market," said John Kunze, Vice President and General Manager of Internet Products at Adobe Systems. "We are very pleased to be working with Open Text, which has taken an innovative approach to using the Web for collaboration on critical business processes. The integration between Open Text's Livelink and Adobe Acrobat software enables customers to automatically move both paper-based and electronic information through their business workflows, without losing the integrity or quality required by important business documents."
"Adobe is a strategic partner for Open Text because of Adobe's vision and leading position in the corporate and Web-based markets. Acrobat Capture delivers information in enriched forms that Livelink's intelligent agents can leverage, and Adobe Acrobat provides the premier solution for creating portable, high quality electronic documents. By integrating with these two leading edge products, Livelink's push capability has become not only smart but also good looking," said Tom Jenkins, the CEO and President of Open Text Corporation.
Livelink Intranet provides document management, visual workflow, project collaboration and searching, all fully accessible over intranets via standard Web browsers. Livelink's recently- announced Change Agents monitor all of the information and business processes within Livelink's purview, notify users of changes relevant to their interests and needs, and allow users to interact with the system through standard email clients.
The new capabilities will be available this summer.
