IBM Unveils High-Capacity Drive

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 15) - IBM Corp. today introduced a 73-gigabyte hard drive, the largest ever, aimed at high-end markets, such as the professional audio industry, credit card transaction processing and digital documentation.

The Ultrastar 72ZX will ship in the first quarter of 2000, according to the statement issued by IBM's San Jose-based Storage System Division. It also unveiled two other hard drives in the Ultrastar series - both 36-gigabyte drives, which will be available in limited quantities this quarter.

In addition to the larger storage space, IBM's new series is designed to perform more reliably while keeping power usage in check.

The announcement validates IBM's leadership in hard drives for the high-end server market, where it maintains a 40 percent market share, according to Salomon Smith Barney computer analyst John B. Jones Jr.

The 73-gigabyte model can store 7.04 billion data bits per square inch. It is roughly the size of a paperback novel and can hold as much information as a floor of books at the New York Public Library 'with room to spare,' the company said.
