You are right, I think that Tornado probably has more needed features in it than just the gui. However, your two points regarding keeping the maximum amount of information on the development server and allowing easy tool integrations should apply to the previous VxWorks product. Frankly, the ideas aren't that revolutionary but certainly sound good in a press release.

It's these types of features (and their acceptance by the market) that have helped VxWorks all along standout from the crowd of embedded development systems.

I don't think that guis are necessarily bad. Some programmers who are converting from other platforms may find it easier to use. The biggest benefit may be allowing the boss to finally understand what the heck you are doing :-)
