Karim,

You can never count out Microsoft. It has enough money to keep trying until it gets it right. But the issue here is time. If the next CE doesn't do it. CE may not have another chance.

Already, there is the merging between the PDA market and cellular market. And the set-top market should start shaping out in the next year. If the latest CE doesn't keep its promise, Microsoft will miss both of these markets. This leaves auto-PC as the only other large market for CE.

What would I do if I were Microsoft? I would buy my way in. Microsoft has already invested billions into telecom servicing companies, it is time to acquire the right technologies. On the top of the shopping list are 3Com and WRS, with QNX and ISI being secondary. So don't count out Microsoft too fast. Bill Gates should address this situation within the next few months.

And lastly, watchout for SUN. It wants to unseat Microsoft in the next decade, so it should be very active as well.
