DUBLIN, Ireland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1999--

IONA iPortal Application Server Beta Program
Commences at IONA World Europe

IONA(r) Technologies (NASDAQ:IONA), a leading provider of
solutions designed to create and deploy eBusiness applications, today
delivers the beta version of IONA iPortal Application Server(tm).
Previously code-named OrbixHome(tm), IONA iPortal Application Server
is the world's first fully integrated development, assembly and
deployment environment for Enterprise JavaBeans(tm) (EJB) and
CORBA(r). IONA iPortal Application Server is a key component of IONA
iPortal Suite(tm), a comprehensive solution for integrating eBusiness
with the enterprise. IONA iPortal Application Server allows
organizations to build and deploy robust, scalable Java(tm)-based
business applications that can also take the maximum advantage of
existing information and application assets.
The IONA iPortal Application Server beta program builds on a
successful early adopters program where a pre-release of the product
was enthusiastically welcomed by a selected group of twenty customers
and partners including EDS's eBusiness unit and Flashline.com. The
beta release of the IONA iPortal Application Server is now available
for download from the IONA web-site at www.iona.com. IONA iPortal
Application Server includes full support for Enterprise JavaBeans 1.1
- the latest release of the EJB standard providing the complete EJB
Container functionality required for Sun Microsystems' Java(tm) 2
Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform. In addition to giving Java
applications full interoperability with existing CORBA applications,
IONA iPortal Application Server provides a rich deployment environment
with CORBA's proven scalability, reliability, and performance, from
the world's leading standards-based middleware provider. It delivers
an exceptionally high 'ease-of-use' graphical interface for
developing, assembling, deploying, managing and maintaining Java
applications, that automatically generates all the necessary XML.
"Customers are looking for high availability solutions that save
them time and money," stated Simon Pepper, senior product manager for
IONA iPortal Application Server. "IONA iPortal Application Server
provides such a solution by increasing productivity with its
easy-to-use, drag and drop component assembly, allowing faster time to
market. The product is built using IONA's latest CORBA technology,
Orbix 2000, which enables the development of scalable, robust EJB
applications that can be integrated with CORBA applications from the
Internet and the desktop to the mainframe."
"Sun Microsystems is particularly excited by IONA's release of
its EJB 1.1 product, the iPortal Application Server, and it's support
of the Java(tm) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, specification (J2EE),"
said Bill Roth, Product Line Manager for the J2EE platform. "We are
pleased to continue our strong relationship with IONA, and look to
them to be among the early vendors to provide a complete Java 2
platform, Enterprise Edition implementation."

"The industry is facing a global software shortage. Reusable
software components offer the only viable solution," said Charles M.
Stack, President and CEO of Flashline.com. "IONA's iPortal Application
Server provides an attractive platform for migrating to this reusable
component architecture. Our membership within the IONA BeanMarket
Partner Program reinforces the business values of developing software
with reusable server-side components in the new economy."

IONA iPortal Application Server Features:

EJB Container Functionality

IONA iPortal Application Server provides the complete EJB
Container functionality required for a J2EE platform. It provides full
support for Session and Entity Beans, Java Naming and Directory
Interface (JDNI), JTA including 2-phase commit, Security Management,
RMI over IIOP and XML-based deployment descriptors.

EJB Container Core

The container core is built using Orbix 2000, the latest release
of IONA's leading CORBA-based platform. This enables true
interoperability between EJB and CORBA environments.

Development Environment

The IONA iPortal Application Server provides a graphical
environment that enables EJB assembly, deployment and administration
through a simple drag and drop graphical interface that makes
large-scale deployment easier and minimizes risk.

GUI for Bean Provision and Bean Assembly

Beans may be written in any IDE. The IONA iPortal Application
Server will provide tight integration with Symantec Visual Cafe
Enterprise Edition for compilation and debugging. The necessary
ejb-jar files and associated XML descriptors for EJB 1.1 applications
are all automatically generated, removing this requirement from the
developer/assembler.

Rich Deployment Environment

The highly scalable EJB Container with fault tolerance and
clustering provides dynamic migration and reconfiguration of EJB
Applications with no system downtime. Applications benefit from the
reliability and manageability of proven and trusted CORBA technology.

Availability

The IONA iPortal Application Server beta release is available
today on the IONA website at www.iona.com. The IONA iPortal
Application Server will be ready for general availability (GA) in
Q1 of 2000.
