My understanding is this is tight pitched metal that is used mostly for cache and datapath to increase the routing density but not used for global routing (I have heard it being counted like 1/2 layer metal).

Is that correct? If not, any clarification is appreciated. I have not had any of the products I worked on crossed 3LM and have only heard of this in the context of what AMDor IBM is doing.
