*...With DSPC, Intel hopes to become a one-stop shop for digital cell-phone components and a supplier to the evolving Internet-appliance market

Considering the above statement, could VARL become an acquisition target to any of the cellular handset/device makers?*

As fart as I can tell, only in two cases would a takeout make sense . . . (VARL simply earns $$$ to small to impact the top line of firms you mention - for the time being)

1) VARL's patent portfolio. This is not just the VCO stuff folks, it extends well into materials and their applications . . .

2) VARL's Opteoelectric unit. They have attracted the likes of LU and JDSU to their components . . . again, product specific reasons.

With that said, I do not feel that at this time such an offer would make much sense. Wireless and Opteoelectrics are fast evolving areas that a bit of a track record needs to be laid before anyone takes a plunge. I am certain that VARL has the abilities to maintain their lead as well as introduce products in new areas (broadband products most recently - NN (Stanford Telecom) and NTRO - between these folks VARL is sole source to more than 50% of LMDS basestations).

Lots to smile about, so little time to act.
