Hi Jim McMannis; Re Athlons on display. The Totem Lake, Kirkland WA, CompUSA had a couple Compaqs on display. The guy who sold me a double fistful of computer games told me that his girlfriend's father had just bought one and that it was fast. I tried the -600MHz they had, and it sure was fast. I think I know why, though I can't explain the relatively low price...

The Compaq Athlon machine apparently includes an Intel processor. This may be an extra expense, or there may be no AMD chip inside at all.

That Athlon-600 was displayed at the end of one of the long aisles, in the premier position where CompUSA puts their baddest machine. The display included the spec sheet on the Athlon, but it also included technical information that I didn't know was included in the Compaq machine. The display behind the computer, in addition to the usual Compaq information, on the left side has a poster explaining how useful it is to purchase a computer with a real Intel processor. On the right side, there is a pile of documents explaining the various Intel processors, particularly the Celeron and the Pentium.

I hadn't realized that AMD was stealing ideas from Intel. Or maybe the two companies have made an agreement allowing them to share the better shelf space. AMD gets the hardware, Intel gets the software (i.e. paper).

Anyway, it was nice to see the staff drooling over them.
