A DAY AT THE RACES- Report from Keeneland
Sorry we missed you at the track- A warm fall Saturday really brings out the crowds. I spotted about 200 different guys with white beards though. <g>
We had a wonderful time just the same. Started popping the Buds about the Louisville City limits (the wife was driving), and we headed on east up I-64. We arrived in time to get bets down on the 3rd race, and I won $12. That would be the last decent ticket I cashed in. My wife hit a 20-1 Win and a 2-1 Place on the 7th race, and won about $45. That put us up on the day, but we stayed and bet the last 2 races anyway. <g> Came out $5 in the hole between us. Not a bad day altogether.
The weather was superb, the track was gorgeous, and the crowd was pleasant for the most part. We dined on some pizza slices, and had a few $3 beers. Cashed a few tickets, and from the "It's a small world" department, ran into one of my Fraternity brothers as we were leaving.
We stayed the night in Frankfort, at the state capitol inn. I should have known it wasn't gonna be that great from the empty parking lot, and the fact that the name had changed, but the price was right, and the location was good.
We stuffed ourselves silly at Jim's Seafood at the KY River Locks and Dam. (A spectacular view in the daytime I'm told) It sits on the site of a former HEMP mill. The food was excellent. I ate so much that I didn't even have room for another beer before turning in.
We headed back west down I-64 sunday morning, and having a little extra time, decided to stop at the KY Flea Market at the Simpsonville exit off I-64. I had seen it many times, but had never checked it out. This place is a MUST see. I have dubbed it the 'Redneck Mall of America'.
You could get anything from pumpkins to blue jeans from the vendors outside. Inside the blue pole buildings was simply amazing: Fried chicken, BBQ and video games. Leather goods, groceries, toys, jewelry, knives, vacuum cleaners, books, software, and even a tattoo parlor.
I bought a kerosene lantern for $3 (Y2K coming ya know), and 3 prs. of dress socks. (top quality they said) <g>. We bought the kids some toys, and picked up a Halloween pumpkin on our way out. I think KY needs to stress math a little more in the schools- the 10 yr. old kid that sold it to me for $2.50 gave me back $27 in change from a $20 bill. LOL. (I did straighten it out for him).
We could have spent most of the day there, and probably spent less than at the track, but we had to get going. Westward ho.
Hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did.
