Dell slumps in after-hours trade after Q3 warning
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news) shares slumped in after-hours trading on Monday after the company warned that rising prices for computer memory chips were likely to hurt profit margins at the fast-growing PCmaker.

Dell's stock price fell to 37-3/4 on Instinet from its regular session close on the Nasdaq stock market of 41-5/16. The closing price on Nasdaq was off 1-1/2 from Friday's closing price amid a general decline in computer issues tied to growing concern about results heading into the end of 1999.

In a statement released Monday afternoon following the close of regular trading, Dell said the effects of the industry-wide memory-cost increase were likely to be a short-term matter, but that Dell's third-quarter operating margins would be hurt.

The company did not comment on how or whether the pressure on profit margins might translate into lower earnings per share.

In a statement, the Round Rock, Texas-based company, stressed that demand for its products was, ''extremely strong and continues to outpace the computer-systems industry and that overall availability of components has improved.''
