ON LANGUAGE BY WILLIAM SAFIRE

"Myself is being used incorrectly in place of the first-person singular nominative. (I'm too shy to write I.)"

In this article, William Safire attributes the wide-spread misuse of "myself" in place of "I" and "me" to self-consciousness. I always thought it was simple ignorance. His explanation doesn't make the usage less jarring to the ear, but it is interesting.
