QUALCOMM and Ericsson announced a converged W-CDMA standard for 3G in March of 1999.The agreement is a joint support for a single standard. The single ,unified W-CDMA standard encompasses three optional modes of operation which include direct frequency division duplexing(FDD),multi-carrier FDD,and time division duplexing (TDD).Each of these modes support operation with both the GSM MAP switching platform for GSM systems and IS-41 switching platform which is used by both TDMA and CDMA systems. The above agreement allows carriers to upgrade there existing system to 3G without having to rollout entire new systems. The agreement allows QUALCOMM to cross license IPR's for all CDMA technologies including cdmaOne,W-CDMA and cdma2000.QUALCOMM also obtained rights to sublicense certain Ericsson patents to its specific (ASIC) customers.Intel and Phillips know the story on the unified 3G CDMA standard and now are buying into the tornado as next generation systems explode.
