The Rite of Spring ... you know it took me a long time to get over the theme? I made the mistake of reading the liner notes before putting needle to vinyl. The idea of a pubescent girl dancing herself to death evokes no small horror in me. But I finally got around to listening all the way through... and like wow, man. That and the Symphony of Psalms are among my favorite pieces of music.
Stravinsky is great imo because he found a confluence point between the complex and the recognizable. Certain jazz composers do the same, but their music is more specialized imo. While there are and will be works that individuals among us feel surpass Stravinsky's best works, those will be minority opinions, an artifact of tastes differing.
I for one find Shostakovich's first violin concerto to be among those rare pieces of music that get the Top Shelf Award. The first movement is pure melancholy draped like an acre of thick velvet.
You can see why it's not easy talking about music. "This piece is true genius." "Why?" "I ... can't explain."
