Bux, when your partner signs deals with your competitor then you can surmise that the bonds of loyalty are tenuous at best.

I disagree strongly. Qualcomm doesn't care which handheld OS is dominant and Wireless Knowledge has stated numerous times that they are "platform agnostic" and their mission is to enable wireless data in all it's forms. My view is that things will play out differently than with DOS and Windows in that many handheld OS's will proliferate. With handhelds, there is not the same need for compatibility with the leading applications. Remember, the primary function of these devices will be as phones, modems, and PDA's, not desktop workstations. I agree with you that PalmOS will take the lead at least for the first year or two but after that, many will proliferate. Nokia will likely produce handsets for multiple OS's.

As far as tenuous bonds of loyalty, Qualcomm licensed PalmOS in September of 1998 while they didn't form Wireless Knowledge untill November 10, 1998. According to your logic, Qualcomm's relationship with 3Com would be tenuous at best. I don't believe this is the case so I suggest you reconsider your premise.
