<You never answered my question - when was the last time Alpha had a design win - outside of Compaq ?>

Never saw it.. did not realize it was at the bottom of
your post several back.

I suppose what you are getting at is who is adopting
Alpha outside of Compaq. There are a number of smaller
OEMs that resell Alpha boxes, you can click on
www.alpha-processor.com and see them. But your point is
well taken. HP will eventually adopt IA-64, Monterey is
the Unix for IA-64. Sun is porting to IA-64 (but in
Sun's case there is clear evidence they aren't much interested having a half-hearted IA-32 strategy and quite
content to make a ton of revenue off of high-end UltraSparc
boxes). By 2002, Windows 2002 should be ready for Merced.

But if Athlon forces Intel to bring Willamette forward
as reported by your favorite U.K E-zine , then Merced is
even a further funk. Willamette at 1.1 GHz and 45 SpecInt95 and Merced at 35 SpecInt95 (spotted that number today
on a roadmap.. non-Intel of course.. maybe it hits 40?).

Tench claims Merced will be successful prior to 2002 disputing the PC World article .. the whole thrust to this
thread. I don't think so. Athlon is forcing Intel's hand
and Intel could care less to guard Merced from internal IA-32 competition. IA-32 is the bread and butter , IA-64 is
the future. Bag the future.

Merced will be marginalized by Willamette if slick-Willy
is brought forward to stave off high-speed Athlosses. Very
real scenario and unfortunately detrimental to Merced.

Sure Merced is great at floating point. What a wonderful business marketing angle, NOT!
