We bought an existing house, three stories, the basement is a walkout, about 2/3 is a finished rec room, 1/3 is a workroom and storeroom, each story is 1,200 sq. ft, not counting the garage. Don't know how that gets counted in California, here they don't advertise nor sell by square footage. I know square footage is a selling point in California.
This would be way too big for a single person, IMO, and also too big for a childless couple. It's a traditional center-hall Colonial, with the bedrooms all upstairs. The kitchen is quite large, maybe 12x20? And my bedroom is huge, 13x26.
My advice is just to go to as many open houses as you can, and get a realtor to show you as many houses as you can. That's the way to really understand the market. But the time I was done, I felt like I could get a job as a realtor and do better than most we met. |
