Company Press Release
National Semiconductor Licenses CIC's Jot Handwriting Recognition System For The Geode WebPAD Reference Platform
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 19, 1999-- Communication Intelligence Corporation (Nasdaq:CICI - news), the leading supplier of pen-based software solutions, and National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM - news) today announced that National is licensing the Jot® handwriting recognition system for its Geode(TM) WebPAD(TM) reference design. The National® Geode WebPAD reference platform is a portable, wireless personal access device (PAD) that uses radio frequencies to enable users to surf the Internet or send and receive email within 500 feet of the device's base station. Adding CIC's Jot technology to the Geode WebPAD platform will drastically reduce the time and effort it takes users to input large amounts of text into the device.

''We designed the WebPAD with a touch screen interface that allows users to easily navigate the Web and input text with a pen and soft keyboard,'' said Jean-Louis Bories, executive vice president of National's Information Appliance group. ''Integrating handwriting recognition technology was the next logical step in the platform's evolution, and the ease of use and accuracy of the Jot solution made CIC stand out from the crowd.''

About the size of a standard 8 1/2x11-inch paper tablet, the Geode WebPAD offers users convenient, portable Internet access without being tied to a traditional desktop PC. The current reference platform is based on the QNX operating system and National's highly integrated Geode GXLV processor, an x86-based chip that integrates sound, graphics, memory control and the PCI interface.

Enabling Text Input

Jot is a print-based recognizer that was developed by CIC after years of research in the area of pattern recognition. Under the terms of its agreement with National, CIC will initially provide Jot for the QNX operating system, and has agreed to future development for the Linux, Windows XX, pSoS and VxWorks operating systems. These operating systems could be used to power future information appliances that may provide push-button access for task specific devices to enable e-commerce, email and fax capabilities.

Guido DiGregorio, president and CEO of CIC, stated, ''National joins companies such as Ericsson and Microsoft in endorsing Jot as an intuitive input solution for today's information appliances. The growing need for mobile information access is driving the proliferation of new devices that offer a pen as the standard means for input and navigation.''
