NP says Goldcorp steams ahead

The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 19, edition that Goldcorp
says it is steaming ahead with development of its Red Lake mine in
Northwestern Ontario despite its failure to resolve a 39-month strike by
unionized workers. The National Post's Briefing column reports that
Goldcorp, which is keen to begin exploiting a newly discovered orebody at
its mine near Balmertown, Ont., says a recent decision by Local 950 of the
United Steelworkers of America to reject the company's latest contract
offer will not delay development of the project. On 'Friday, the
Steelworkers narrowly rejected Goldcorp's offer, which included wage
increases and what the company termed a "generous severance package." The
paper neglects to say that Goldcorp is asking its striking employees to
resign and reapply for jobs when the mine reopens in Nov. 2000.
