bill, so money is a kiler and the lyrics that you let into your soul doesn't hurt you. lyrics breed death or life. It's not the style or guitars or drums or how loud. I had a janis album maybe years before you did. I'm familiar with all her music and life. I even live in austin now. I didn't go into any debasing of Janis. I've made my point... My teens listen to no secular music. Like their parents They listen and our family listens to only christain. now is rock and blues, and you name it. but the lyrics breed life not death, drugs, rebellion. we don't tell other christians what they should listen to unless they ask. We witness by our lifestyle and the music we listen to, but we are not on a soapbox demanding christians and the world change their music. Now, I do mention that our kids are great in the Lord becuase they guard what they hear and see..Like Jesus said. Infact one of the boys my tenth grader is witnessing borrowed my Grammertrain album today. ....He's on Megadeath now.
I don't mind you blasting the money guys.. I have no blast for you. and, especially if your music isn't christain. It's between you and God.. let Him tell you wahat music to listen too. As to Hendrix , Janis, Grand Funk, etc. etc. I had all their albums long before you did. I had 1000's of them. I've seen the best years ago.. bet you don't remember Felix Papaluada.. I got the light on what went into my soul years ago. I threw them all away.... I now have the largest christian colection in Austin and Houston... same rock, blue,jazz... but the lyrics are all differnet. the musicians aren't perfect but they know God and want Him to move in their life. The motives behind their music is christian. It's doesn't have to always agree with my interpretation of the bible but their motives are pure.
So, my reasoning is.... be careful for by the standard you measure it will be measure back to you.
I won't ask you what music you listen to. that's between you and God. But, you have never heard of Larry Norman???? The song about Janis was "why don't you look into Jesus" the rest of the song is fantastic.. the lyrics are immortal. another line " you're still look'n to get lay'd.. you get gonnerhea on Valentine's day...rock'n roll star you want to be..you'll be dead before you're 33"
talk about money... Larry nrman could have had 25 milion platmium songs. but, he gave up all that fame and money to be the grandfather of contemporary christian music.
One you may remember he wrote in 1969. "I wish we've all been ready" "Rock that makes me Roll"
With my teenagers I do not emortalize hendrix, janis, etc. I lift people up for their character..not their talent. You can hit 50 homeruns, or and 25 platiums records.. that will means beans to my kids.. they have never seen Micheal Jackson and don't want to....never watch MTV. They would rather meet and talk to Mother Teresa or go take some freinds to a Billy Graham meeting. Their heroes are entirely differnt. I let them pick their on heroes by themselves now.... but they use how a person follows Jesus to determine that.. not if they can whale a song out. especially since all their groups are even better than Janis, Hendrix and you name it. You just perfrom better if you are not on drugs<g>
So, there is no character assination...no one bad mouthed anyone. I just think that these Janis's, hendrix's may still be your heros. I'm not bad mouthing that either, you have a relationship with God why do I need to tell you, let Him... but guard the portals to your heart. Jesus said that not me.
I think I spend my time letting Jesus work on me and a lot less time bashing others..whether they be evangelist or rockstars, or ball stars. Pick a fault in someone else and God is more interested in working with me on my faults than me continually talking about faults in other chrsitains whether they be on TV or not.
