I suppose upon first glance one might think that they in the synagogue became angry when our Lord spoke of Elias and certain healings, however, they were angry because they were the chief priests and elders, the high religious order,...and here right in front of them was this very lowly man...son of a carpenter, who was telling them that the spirit of God was upon him...and that God sent Him to do all those things which only the Son of God could do! .....God forbid!! Who is this man? He is only the son of Joseph the carpenter....is he not?
How could it be that this scripture from the most holy book of Elias could be fulfilled right here in our ears by this lowly man? Fulfilled by him? God forbid? How is it that we didn't know HE was coming? Why did not our God tell us?... (And of course He did.. in the scriptures ,but their robes were far too long and bulky... for them to walk a straight line).... How dare he tell us such a thing in front of our congregation and make us look like fools? We are the leaders of these people!! We should know when God sends the Messiah!! We should be the ones to announce to our people that the Messiah has come!!! Not this lowly man...the son of a carpenter!!!
Should we rent our clothes now and repent? God frobid.!! We will instead rip his clothes off his back...better yet we will deliver him to Pilate and let his men do it, and let them crucify him.!! We will keep our hands clean!! Irony, what irony. For Pilates hands were the only clean hands.
After Jesus our Lord proclaimed to them, that these scriptures had been fulfilled right there in their ears they immediately began seeing Red. Anything He had to say after that point became only an excuse to trap and have Him crucified !!
Also remember Brian that they gave Jesus did not continue reading the portion He was given.
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Remember Jesus did not read:....and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
He stopped in the middle of the sentence because it was not the appointed time!!!
These highly religious men also realized that Jesus had stopped in the middle of that scripture assigned to Him, with no explanation. How dare He?
Let there be no mistake....our Lord Jesus was hated by the religious order of His day for the same reason that He is hated by some religious orders of this day....He proclaimed to be the Messiah!!

But missing Him then will not be as unfortunate (because it was prophesied that He must die)... as missing Him the second time He appears! And this time many who believe themselves to be followers of Him will miss His appearance, for they will have already worshipped the spurious messiah when he appears first!!
