I run 64MB on an NT workstation and have good performance with Visual C++, running a web server, and an X-server. There are people who get significant performance improvement from more RAM, but the return is diminishing. I would expect any new OS from MS to bloat up considerably, but I would expect that 128 MB to be the sweet spot for NT workstation (i.e. Win2000 Professional) and 64 MB to be the sweet spot for the home version (Personal). Most versions will be Win2000 Personal.

I agree that historically MS has underestimated -- they said 16MB was a minimum for Win95, and I actually ran it on such a system for a while, but it really was improved dramatically with 32MB.

It's all a cost/performance thing to me -- I hardly think you'd advocate 128 MB at any cost. That's what Larry was taunting us about a month or two ago. I wouldn't hesitate to put 128MB in my home computer for $100 like I did early in the summer, but I certainly wouldn't advocate that now. Wasted $$$ for 90% of the Win95/98 camp out there (i.e. 90% screen saver folks).

Also, the migration to Win95/98 hasn't been particularly stellar. I got Win95 the day it came out; Win98 about 9 months after release; I have no plans to upgrade to Win2000. Some day there may be a reason to get it, but I don't see it right now for me.
