ADVISORY/Ameritech's Richard C. Notebaert, And SBC'S Edward E. Whittacre Jr. Speaking Together for the First Time in Public Since FCC'S Approval of Merger --(BUSINESS WIRE)--
WHAT: Ameritech's Chairman Richard C. Notebaert and SBC's Chairman of the Board and CEO Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., will address the Economic Club of Chicago, for the first time together in public, since the FCC approved the merger of these two major corporations. They will be speaking about the "Future of Communications and Ameritech." FCC Chairman William E. Kennard stated, "No proposed telecommunications industry merger that has come before this commission has been more momentous than this" (Chicago Tribune 10/7/99) This transaction has been valued at about $72 billion and will create the nation's largest telecommunications merger. This merger will give these combined powers the ability to invest in new technologies to deliver the benefits of growth to customers, and strengthen their position in the global marketplace.
WHO: Ameritech's Richard C. Notebaert was elected to his current position on April 20, 1994. He began his career in 1969 at Wisconsin Bell before moving to Ameritech Communications in 1983 as Vice President of Marketing and Operations. In addition to serving as a Director of the Economic Club of Chicago, he serves on the boards of SBC Communications, Sears, Roebuck & Co., Aon Corporation, and United Way/Crusade of Mercy. SBC's Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., one of the savviest leaders in this new age of networks and one of the most vigorous competitors in the business, assumed his current position on January 1, 1990. He began his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1963 as a facility engineer in Lubbock. He served as President and COO from 1988 until elected to his current position. Mr. Whitacre is on the boards of Anheuser-Busch, Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Corporation, Emerson Electric, The May Department Stores, The Institute for International Economics, and is a member of The Business Council.
