Spain had a pivotal role in geopolitics in the thirties.

All of that would be important if one were, say, writing a book on European history 60 years from now, but not if one were writing a single chapter on the subject. Spain is mostly important because of what did not happen there.

My point is the events in Spain in the 30s and thereafter are interesting details that would be ignored if one is painting a history with broad strokes. That's what a list of 100 world-historical figures is all about, the broad strokes.

Franco would belong in a 1000-name list. He might even belong in a 500-name list. He doesn't belong in a 100-name list.
