Philips Close To CDMA Deal With Qualcomm
RDSL
19 October 1999
Philips Semiconductors says that it is close to agreeing a CDMA licence with Qualcomm after VLSI lost its Qualcomm CDMA licence after being acquired by Philips. The new deal is said to have more favourable terms than the original deal with VLSI. Qualcomm also says that a new licence should be awarded in the near future.

Meanwhile, Philips Semiconductor is launching baseband mobile communications chipsets for the GPRS and Bluetooth standards using technology it acquired with the purchase of VLSI.

Philips has launched a developer product using Ericsson's radio module and is planning to launch the VWS26002/X, a version for early production use, in January 2000.

The latter chipset will have an interface ASIC for the Philips RF module. The main Blueberry chipset will be launched in April 2000 with a direct interface to Philips' component.

The company has launched the OneC1.2, a 0.25 micrometre GSM baseband chipset which supports GPRS 2RX and 1TX standards and has an architecture capable of supporting 4RX and 4TX. A 1.3 generation is planned in early-2000.
