Sun Microsystems to Disclose Software Acquisition Tomorrow

Palo Alto, California, Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Sun Microsystems Inc., the No. 4 maker of computer servers, said it will disclose the acquisition of a software maker tomorrow.

Sun will hold a conference call at 8 a.m. San Francisco time to discuss the completion of its purchase of electronic-commerce software maker Forte Software Inc., to talk about its software development tools strategy and to unveil ''another strategic software acquisition.'' It wasn't more specific. The company couldn't immediately be reached to comment.

Palo Alto, California-based Sun has been snapping up software companies in a bid to become more of a threat to archrival Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker. In August, Sun acquired closely held Star Division Corp. to get word- processing and spreadsheet software that competes with Microsoft products. Terms weren't disclosed.

Just a week before buying Star Division, Sun agreed to buy Forte for about $540 million in stock. Forte makes products to help big customers like Marriott International Inc. do more of their business online.

Sun shares rose 1/2 to 94 1/16. The announcement was made after the 4 p.m. close of regular trading in New York.
