Marconi Wins $53 Million Contract With Telecom Italia
By James Amott at Bloomberg News
19 October 1999
Marconi Communications, a unit of U.K. defense and engineering company General Electric Co. Plc, said it won a 32 million pound ($53 million) contract to supply equipment to Telecom Italia SpA that will boost transmission speed on phone lines by as much as 40 times and increase Internet capacity.

It is the first stage of a three-year agreement with Italy's national telecommunications operator that could be worth as much as 100 million pounds to Marconi, GEC said.

Marconi's synchronous digital hierarchy and ring-based wave division multiplexing technology will provide much faster transmission of all types of telecommunications traffic, from local calls to the Internet, by expanding the band-width of existing optical fiber cables. Telecommunications companies are increasing their network capacity to gain a bigger share of the growing revenue from the Internet.

"Our latest transmission products are enabling Telecom Italia to multiply its network capacity many times over at a fraction of the cost of laying new physical cable," said Peter Brown, president of Marconi's EMEA Group.

Wave division multiplexing achieves very fast transmission speeds by splitting light into several wavelengths, each capable of carrying digital information. WDM networks carry more traffic over conventional optical fiber cables than systems using single-wavelength light.

Marconi unveiled its WDM technology last week at the Telecom '99 trade fair in Geneva, it said.

The installation of WDM and SDH technology will pave the way for even higher transmission speeds over existing cable as demand for voice, data and multimedia services grows, it said.

GEC shares rose 23 pence, or 3.9%, to 612p.
