I've copied an announcement today from BCE Emergis/Ariba which appeared on the very quiet BCE Emergis thread.

While I'm not particularly knowledgeable about ARBA, I know they're a leader in B2B e commerce solutions. For those of you who don't know BCE Emergis, they are owned by BCE (Bell Canada Enterprises) which is the leading telco in Canada. BCE also owns about 40% of NT. BCE is akin to ATT here up north, but has recently started to reinvent itself as more than simply a telco. BCE Emergis trades mostly on the Montreal Stock Exchange, but is also listed in Toronto, symbol IFM. IFM has had quite a run the last year - with some interesting e commerce plays in banking (EBPP) and mortgage admin. I'm not completely clear on what today's deal means, however I suspect it will be positive for both firms. One final note, Ameritech(soon to merge with SBC) recently took a 20% interest in the parent firm BCE. There's an interesting track into the US market and deep pockets behind this company. Long post below is today's PR. Comments most welcome.

Global Alliance with Ariba, to Provide Business-to-Business e-Commerce Solutions
October 19, 1999

Montreal, Quebec and Sunnyvale, California--

BCE Emergis To Create B2B Market Place Powered By Ariba Network

BCE Emergis, one of the leading e-commerce providers in North
America and Ariba, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARBA), the leader in
business-to-business eCommerce solutions for operating resources,
today jointly announced a broad business-to-business eCommerce
alliance. BCE Emergis and Ariba will co-market their e-commerce
solutions and expand the reach of the Ariba Network(tm) platform
through the creation of the BCE Emergis enabled market place.
This strategic alliance will further provide BCE Emergis with new
business opportunities in the U.S.

As part of the agreement, BCE Emergis will 1) use the global
Ariba Network platform, including the Ariba Internet Business
Exchange(tm) service, to create a market place and
network-centric buying application infrastructure for connecting
buyers and sellers, 2) team with Ariba to market e-procurement
solutions to buying organizations of all sizes, 3) become an
Ariba application service provider (ASP) to both resell and host
Ariba ORMX(tm) applications for mid-size and large businesses, 4)
conduct joint development and deployment of future value added
services for the Ariba Network platform, and 5) provide worldwide
redundant mirroring services for the Ariba Network platform.

"BCE Emergis has the eCommerce expertise, market focus and
infrastructure to successfully deliver Ariba solutions to top
2000 North American companies and to thousands of smaller
businesses throughout the United States and Canada," said Keith
Krach, President and CEO at Ariba. "These buying organizations
will in turn bring their suppliers to the BCE Emergis enabled
market place powered by Ariba, adding further value to the Ariba
ecosystem. The BCE Emergis enabled market place will provide new
global onramps to the Ariba Network platform and rapidly
accelerate the network effect for all Ariba buying organizations,
commerce communities and suppliers."

"After evaluating all major vendors, our decision to partner with
Ariba was based on identifying the world's best e-procurement
technology, in order to extend our leadership as a global
eCommerce provider throughout North America", said Brian Edwards,
President and Chief Executive Officer, BCE Emergis. "We are
particularly enthusiastic about putting in place an electronic
market place that will create value for our customers using the
Internet, and will bring to existing buyer and supplier
relationships new cost savings and revenue opportunities."

BCE Emergis and Ariba will also use the recently announced Ariba
Internet Business Exchange service to create commerce communities
on the Internet, serving the clients of business to business
portals. The Ariba Internet Business Exchange service is an
extension of the Ariba Network platform that allows hosted
procurement and other commerce services to be deployed without
developing, installing or maintaining a separate commerce
infrastructure.

The Ariba Network platform is a global, open network of eCommerce
services on the Internet that integrates business buyers,
suppliers, marketplaces and commerce service providers. The Ariba
ORMS(tm), Ariba ORMX and Ariba IBX(tm) business-to-business
eCommerce solutions work with the Ariba Network platform to lower
business operating costs and increase profits by intelligently
managing and automating business buying processes for operating
resources, the non-production goods and services companies need
for daily operations. Ariba solutions provide e-procurement
services including content access, strategic sourcing, approval
workflow, electronic payments and ERP integration as well as
other operating resource management services such as internal
service allocation and travel and expense reporting.

Ariba, Inc. is the world's leader in business-to-business
electronic commerce services and software for operating

Network platform, the industry's leading open, global platform
for business-to-business commerce on the Internet. Together,
