Lucent is bloated compared to Cisco...heavier balance sheet and negative 1.2 billion operating cash vs Cisco almost 3 billion positive operating cast last quarter. Not a pretty sight... However, there is something to be said about gravity. You have greater diversification of technology (fiber optics, DSL) and a better arsenal of patents (Bell Labs). Cisco pays a premium for R&D it acquires from purchase of start-ups. Lucent until recently has taken on a more traditional home-grown route. Who cares if the lady Lucent is a fat ugly pig if her child-bearing hips can yield more and at a faster rate than Cisco.
