Snewton? Newtsun?

>What do you think of the rumors, as reported by CNNfn that Apple is in talks with Sun to sell the Newton?<

1) MacWeek's Mac the Knife reported yesterday that SUNW has a program underway to Java-tize the NewtonOS.

2) Mac Recon has a long standing opinion that the Newton *IS* the Network Computer.

3) AAPL has openly solicited co-developer interest on the Newton platform in the past.

So it seems entirely likely that SUNW and AAPL are/would be in discussions over the future of this platform.

IMHO, both sides can argue from strength; have a lot to offer; and have a lot to gain. Whether it takes the form of a sale, licensing agreement or an alliance is anybody's guess. The strong reception of the 2000 and 300E should strengthen AAPL's hand.

Also, a strategic consideration may be that the Newton (NC) could be the AAPL product that Larry Ellison most covets. If AAPL can tie up that asset through a deal with SUNW, then Ellison's primary raison d'etre for an AAPL takeover may be done away with.
