Teltrend's ASTS System Wins Prestigious 1999 IEC InfoVision Award

ST. CHARLES, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1999--Teltrend Inc. (Nasdaq: TLTN - news) announced today that its new ASTS System has been awarded the prestigious 1999 InfoVision Award by the International Engineering Consortium (IEC). Teltrend Inc. will be recognized during the 1999 National Communications Forum at a ceremony on Tuesday, October 26, 1999, at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare (Chicago, Illinois).

Teltrend's ASTS System (Advanced Span Termination System) is an integrated local loop transmission system for DS1 service providers, enabling broadband access for worldwide networks. The system is used to deploy DS1 services with copper based technologies such as T1, HDSL, and HDSL2, all of which can coexist in the same shelf and be managed with the same optional common controller card. Integrated into the system are capabilities such as high-speed multiplexer interfaces (DS-3, STS-1, OC-3), 1xN protection switching, test access, OS access (X.25 or TCP/IP), full performance monitoring and complete diagnostics. The ASTS System conforms to the recently published Open Span Termination System standard (OSTS - see www.teltrend.com), is NEBS Level 3 compliant, and meets the stringent safety requirements of UL1950.

According to Steve Snow, Senior Vice President of Sales and Strategic Marketing at Teltrend, ''Having the ASTS System recognized with an InfoVision Award means a lot to our entire team here at Teltrend, and we anticipate that it means equally as much to our customers. We have developed a Hi-Cap service delivery system that enables ILECs, CLECs, and other DS1 service providers to drastically reduce their costs while increasing their circuit performance and reliability. Given ASTS's interoperability with other vendors' T1, HDSL, and HDSL2 plug-ins, its adherence to industry standards, and its capability to integrate into both new and established public networks, we feel justified in referring to ASTS as the 'World's Most Network-Integrated DS1 Transmission System'.''

The InfoVision Awards, which recognize the information industry's most original products are based on the following criteria: innovation, uniqueness, market impact, customer benefit, and value to society. The award winners were selected by the InfoVision Awards Committees, which are composed of chairpersons, committee members, and executives from manufacturers and service providers; editors of the industry's leading professional journals; and faculty from prestigious engineering universities.

''This year's InfoVision award winners have clearly earned the accolades and recognition they are receiving,'' said John Janowiak, Forum Director. ''The winning entries demonstrate the vision of these companies, which only can be described as leading-edge. The technology advancements demonstrated by the winning products and services, such as Teltrend's innovative ASTS System, will have a positive impact on the growth and advancement of the industry.''

Now in its third year, the InfoVision Awards program inherits the rich history of its predecessor, the ComForum Awards, which recognized innovative technologies and services within the communications and information industry. Past recipients of this exclusive award include Alcatel, Ameritech, AT&T, Bell Atlantic, Eastman Kodak, GTE Services, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Nortel, NYNEX, and Zenith.
